Adapting to Meet Changing Needs

Southern Hills Skilled Nursing Rehab

Times are rapidly changing in skilled nursing facilities across the country. For hundreds of years, nursing homes have been providing care to seniors and individuals with disabilities requiring a certain level of care that can’t be met through home or other community services. Dating back to the mid-1960s, nursing homes have been a solid fixture in America’s healthcare system. Back then, these facilities offered seniors and individuals with disabilities a dedicated setting to live, as well as receive basic care and meals. Today, the focus is no longer on medical care, but on a more homelike, person-centered environment that meets individualized needs of those we serve.

As nursing homes continue to see an influx of higher acuity patients, their role in the long-term care continuum continues to expand. Nursing homes increasingly offer the same kind of care that can be expected in the hospital environment. With shorter hospital stays than they used to be, skilled nursing facilities are fulfilling a need to admit and provide higher acuity care to individuals with medically complicated health conditions. The population of younger nursing home residents is on the rise and long-term care (LTC) is no longer synonymous for “geriatric care”. To keep up with these changes, many skilled facilities have welcomed additional clinical specialists to their teams and diversified their service options.

At Southern Hills, we have seen first-hand the benefit that comes with working across settings and disciplines to provide comprehensive care to individuals we serve. We realize that no one type of care is the right fit for every individual and recognize the need to bridge the gap in the continuum of care as it relates to chronic illness and specific needs. Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals are committed to meeting a wide range of personal and medical needs with care, compassion and consideration. That level of concern is reflected everywhere, from the attractive surroundings to the way we get to know and respect the needs of each and every individual we serve. Whether you are seeking rehabilitation, skilled nursing, or long-term care, Southern Hills is here to provide the care you need and deserve.
